The NICEST Compliment

I got the absolte nicest compliment today. A fan of my work said

"I like how your paintings come across as a tad bit ethereal. It's almost as if you have a way of placing your animal subjects in their own mental world. There's a sense they are looking  at us through their more peaceful/silent world into our human world. "

Wow! Thank You!

My Style

People have asked me what my "style" is. Hmmm... My style is very much my own. Definitely not traditional, maybe a bit impressionistic, but not completely Modern either. When I think about it my painting style  actually mirrors my decorating style, and even the style I use to dress up. I like to be comfortable and though I like pretty things, never so pretty that you cannot relax into them . I want my paintings and my home and my clothes to make me and you comfortable too, maybe even make you smile. Sometimes I use bright colors and other times pastels and that usually is a reflection of my subject or my mood. I never want to be too predictable and rarely do I do the same thing twice. I am always trying on new styles, new colors. There is a room in my house that I have painted ten times in 6 years, I call it my "color therapy" room.

There are many many many artists and decorators and photographers out there who are "better", have more "technique". and experience or training , who can make something look more "realistic" and who can decorate with more sopistication. I am not in competition with them. I only compete with myself. I learn from my mistakes and I take big chances. My style is me! And there  is only ONE ME!

LUCY and ETHEL

I just love the way these big woolly sheep look, like nosy busy bodies just hanging out. Under all that fur they are really just petite little things, however, with thier big fur coats they resemble  glamorous Movie Stars !  Dahling!
This painting is entitled "Lucy and Ethel"  and is painted on 100% cotton canvas which measures 30" H X 40" W

Colors:
Benjamin Moore paint colors- Pink Cloud, Jute, White, Feather Gray, Lavender

MAGGIE

My son Cooper changes his favorite color, frequently. For the last month it was Green. This week, his favorite color is "Aqua". Coincidentally, that has been my favorite color for at least a year now.  Aqua reminds me of only good, very  naturally beautiful things; the sky,  the sea, the ocean water off the side of a boat in the Florida Keys; water so clear you can see schools of brightly colored fish  just swimming along' doing their little fish life. Beautiful eyes. I love aqua. So it should come as little surprise that I use this color for my backgrounds, frequently.

This baby calf came right over to me , standing at the fench, nosy as ever, and put it's face right into my camera. I painted her last year and gave the painting to my cousin Vicki for her birthday. We visited Vicki  in D.C. over Spring Break and I saw the painting in her  kitchen and I thought, "I HAVE to paint this baby again!" So I did! Next time, probably next week, I am going to paint her on a 30" X 40"
 canvas!

Title: MAGGIE 20" H X 24" W , latex on 100% cotton canvas,
Colors: black, grey, aqua, brown, white and pink.

Installation Number ONE!

Lesli Devito Paintings:

One of my Best friends sent me a photo of one of these cows. I had to look it up. They are called "Highland" cattle. The lingo used to describe them is new to me. Words like "folds" and "Drovers". "There are over 80 folds in 18 countries around the world".  I mainly just think they are absolutely adorable. I have been told that my paintings are "whimsical". These cows from the get go are overflowing with personality, I mean, can you look at them and NOT smile? My work is made easy!  I think I may do a series, but for now, this one is dedicated to Emily and is entitled:
"HOMER" and he is 20"  W x 24" H.  Colors used are yellows, white, browns, and pinks, with some touches of periwinkle.

for more information on Highland Cattle, this site is a good start:

Like all of my paintings, He is painted on 100% cotton canvas with LOW or NO VOC water based paint.  But don't hold me to this as I intend to move to oils after my next private show at Sustain, Inc., on April 29.
